The Worshipful Company of Engineers
(Incorporated by Royal Charter 2004)

What we do

Grants from the Charitable Trust Fund

One-off grants are made on behalf of the Charitable Trust Fund by the Worshipful Company of Engineers Charity and Grants Committee. This Committee is given direction by the Trustees on the annual level of funds available, and then manages a process for logging requests to the Company and ensuring that these are assessed appropriately on a regular basis. The Clerk to the Trustees (also The Clerk of the Worshipful Company of Engineers) is responsible for the management of applications and for advising applicants if they have been successful; in order to save on postage and administration those requests that cannot be supported are not acknowledged in a written form.

The types of charitable support, based on the objects of the Charitable Trust that can be considered by The Charity and Grants Committee are in 4 main categories of applicant and area of activity, as follows:

Education in the Profession of Engineering – Financial Hardship

  1. Undergraduate students at British Universities studying engineering subjects who are suffering hardship and would not complete their first degrees without financial support.
  2. Postgraduate students (PhD or MSc), who have completed a first degree in engineering, and at a British University who are suffering hardship and would not complete their courses and be awarded their postgraduate qualifications without financial support.

(Note1: in either of the above cases the applicant’s case must be strongly supported in writing by the Dean of Engineering (or equivalent) of their University. As well as financial hardship, any forms of disability with their personal effort to overcome this will also be included as part of the criteria)

(Note 2: support is not given to start a course only to complete it)

(Note 3: preference for scarce resources will be given to UK citizens)

General Cases - Financial Hardship

  1. Existing Engineers’ Company Members, retired Members, or, the wives, husbands, widows, widowers, children, orphans and others depending on them can be considered for the relief of hardship.
  2. Professional Engineers who have been engaged in engineering at Chartered Engineer level in industry and commerce generally can be considered for the relief of hardship.

Support of the City of London

  1. Organisations and individual charities that further the interest of the history, traditions and customs of the City of London can be supported.
  2. The Lord Mayor, Alderman and Corporation of the City of London in all matters relevant to life of the City of London including especially any charitable activities with relevance to ‘engineering’ can be considered.

Support of Other Engineering Activity

  1. Applications can be made from charitable organisations with a strong history or ethos of engineering, especially at a professional level but also at secondary level, considered as part of the promotion, development and advancement of the science, art and practise of engineering.
  2. The Company is a Patron of RedR UK – Charity Number 1079752 – Formerly Engineers for Disaster Relief and now ‘helping rebuild lives in times of disaster’. The Company provides a regular donation to RedRUK and offers support within the City of London and though its membership to the Charity’s activities.
