There are 2 categories of membership of the Company: Freeman and Liveryman.
Freemen are limited to Chartered Engineers who are registered with engineering-related professional bodies which are Licensed Members of the Engineering Council UK (ECUK) and, additionally, are approved by the Court of Assistants or registered with such other overseas regulatory bodies whose standards for professional engineers are accepted by ECUK.
Appropriately supported applications from Chartered Engineers and Corporate Members of bodies approved by the Court of Assistants will not require an interview. The approved bodies, which are incorporated by Royal Charter, are currently: The Institution of Civil Engineers, The Institution of Mechanical Engineers, The Institution of Engineering and Technology, The Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining, The Institution of Chemical Engineers, The Institution of Structural Engineers, The Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers, The Energy Institute, The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology, The Royal Aeronautical Society, The Royal Institute of Naval Architects, The Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers, The Institute of Measurement & Control, The British Computer Society, The Institution of Engineers Australia, and The Institute of Physics.
For applications from Chartered Engineers and Corporate Members of an unapproved body, a meeting with an interview panel is required and, additionally, if the applicant is a Fellow then they will be required to certify that their Institution has a Professional Review and Interview by existing Fellows as part of its Fellowship procedures.
Applicants who are not yet Fellows of their professional bodies are admitted as Freeman of the Company in the expectation that they will be elected to Fellowship in a reasonable time; all applications in this category will be referred to an interview panel.
Applicants who are Chartered Engineers but are not a Corporate Member of a professional engineering body may apply, but acceptance is subject to a special procedure on which The Clerk can advise.
