The Worshipful Company of Engineers
(Incorporated by Royal Charter 2004)

Membership

Stages of membership

The first stage of obtaining membership is to apply for the Freedom of the Company to become a Freeman. The application has to be supported by three Liverymen one of whom must be an Assistant of the Court and two of whom must have known the applicant for at least two years. An interview can be arranged with the wardens if an applicant is unable to find sufficient sponsors. The applicant must not have been convicted of a criminal offence. The Clerk will advise an applicant of those offences which are considered by the City to debar an applicant from the Freedom. The Freedom application fee is £75.00 and the Quarterage (annual subscription) for Freemen is £200.00 per annum making a total of £275.00 to be enclosed with the application.

After Membership and Freedom of the Company is obtained, it is necessary to obtain the Freedom of the City of London through the Chamberlain’s Court arrangements; this process will be assisted by the Clerk. Thereafter qualified Freemen can be admitted to the Livery at the next Clothing Ceremony following their admission to the Freedom of the City of London. Clothing of new Liverymen takes place at the Meetings of the Court of Assistants held a number of times during each year. Once a Freeman is eligible for admission to the Livery, they are invited to attend before the Court at which time the Livery Fine of £250.00 is payable. This fine was determined by the Court of Aldermen in1983.

Only after admission to the Livery of the Company does a member achieve full membership and with it the right to elect the Sheriffs and Lord Mayor of the City of London.
